Most everyone enjoys fondue. Dipping food into a pot of some melted scrumptious sauce is not only tasty but fun. Fondue parties are a lot of fun and having a fondue pot on the table is a great for getting the conversation going.
About fondue (fahn-DOO) It comes from the French word for "melt". There are a few classifications of fondue:
- Fondue au fromage, the Swiss classic dish of melted cheeses, white wine and kirsch. It is served with bread chunks.
- Fondue bourguignonne, a variation where raw beef cubes are cooked in a pot of hot oil, then dipped into various savory sauces.
- Chocolate fondue, a combination of melted chocolate, cream and flavorings served with pound cake and fruits.
Nowadays you can find lots of variety for fun fondues - even restaurants dedicated to just fondue!
Tips for Fondue
- Melt your ingredients in a pan over the stove.
- Most recipes will call for some type of starch, if yours does not add a little cornstarch to keep the cheeses from separating.
- If the fondue is too thin, turn up the heat a little and stir rapidly until some of the liquid evaporates but do not boil.
- If it is too thick add some more wine, turn up the heat, and stir vigorously until the fondue is smooth but do not boil.
- Transfer your fondue to a fondue pot or a crockpot to keep it warm.
- To buy your own fondue pot, go to your local cooking shop or "superstore" like Target or Wal-Mart.
